In Response to the Tragedy at Ft. Hood

We grieve. And we extend condolences, sincere and genuine. And I extend mine to the families of those slain in yesterday’s shootings; to those injured and to their families.

Today though, beyond our shock, and beyond our grief, we must do something different. We must face the reality that this shooting underscores: It was not the first and it will not be the last. NO amount of military or police presence can protect us from an individual intent on doing harm. The protection of life, liberty and property must begin with us. We must be prepared to defend ourselves. In our earliest days as a country, Noah Webster recognized, “the whole body of the people are armed , and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, of any pretence, raised in the United States.”

Not even the greatest military can protect us. Everywhere, at all times, individuals must be prepared to defend themselves and their family. Do not be afraid, but be bold and courageous knowing that you have done all you can to protect yourself and your family. Take up arms, learn to use them and use them well. We will all be safer for it.

It’s time we have unlicensed open carry. As it stands, Texas is one of 6 that does not have some form of open carry and that is unacceptable. In Texas heat, it is not always feasible to conceal a firearm, which is a natural right of defense, and since it cannot be concealed, we cannot carry. This limits our 2nd amendment and our right to defend ourselves and family.

I recently moved back home to the HAYS County area from Alaska. I was suprised that many of the freedoms like open-carry, no concealed carry permit required that were normal for Alaska are not available in TEXAS?!?!?!?!
There were no snakes, no border issues in Alaska. So, it makes MORE sense that responsible Texans should be able to have free and clear access to rights given in the 2nd Amendment!

I was a licensed Concealed Carrier, but let my license expire, because it is so hot no our great state. Jeans and Tee’s are almost required dress, and that leaves very little space ti conceal. I whole heartedly agree that Texas should be an open carry State. The police can only after the fact, which leaves only ourselves to protect family, property and self. I have entertained the idea of moving to Arizona, For their Political agendas on Fire arms and Illegal Immigration. COME ON TEXAS WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LEADERS NOT FOLLOWERS.

I advocate a choice, open or concealed, user’s choice. I do not necessarily want to advertise everytime I go out in public that I am armed.

Open carry closed carry. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have wanted to go to WalMart late at night to pick up one thing or another I have badly needed early the next morning and didn’t feel safe enough to go. If I could carry a gun I would be able to go shopping. After all the stores are open late at night but it is just not safe enough to go unarmed especially for a woman. I want to see open carry and concealed carry legal for all adults. It should be our free choice no one should be forced but if I need to pick up toilet paper late at night I don’t want to have to worry about being mugged walking from the car or walking down the store aisle. Long live the Republic!

Carry a concealed gun anyway, and work on getting your license. If you are faced with a life/death situation and have to use your piece, at least you have a better chance of staying alive. You can deal with the fine of not having a license later. But get your butt in gear and get licensed. It costs about $80-$100. Get friends/family to help you pay for the licensing if you cannot afford it. Also every GI should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon on post/base. If others had been armed at Ft. Hood, much fewer deaths would have occured. For example, in Israel, soldiers are required to be armed at all times. Here, most GIs are sitting ducks. Even the military police can only be armed while on duty while on post/base.

As a former police officer we must as Texan’s get an open carry law passed, and do away with the concealed carry permit requirement. If the criminals had no idea who was carrying crime would go down. As a former office 99% of the time we only investigated after the crime was commited.Other that traffic violations, and having a public presence we did not prevent crime. With cities and counties cutting police and county officers rather than cutting much of the unnecessary expenses the general public and the individual will either take up the mantle and protect ourselves or accept being a victim.

I totally agree, Texans should be able to open carry without a license, being law abiding Texas Nationals, and yes police cannot prevent crime, it leaves us to protect ourselves when the going gets tough. I for one I`m for it, let`s hope and pray that it will happen in our lifetime to see. Thank you Don Rhode for your post.
